A Bridal Shower Devotional: A Proverbs 31 Wife

In May, my sweet sister in law got married, and towards the end of her engagement, I co-hosted a Bridal Shower with my mother in law. At the beginning of the planning process, the desire to write her a devotional for her shower was placed on my heart. In my research on Bridal Shower Devotionals, I found very few resources on the topic, and almost none on the topic of a Proverbs 31 Wife. So after much prayer & reflection on the topic and on my sister in law and her godly wife responsibilities & desires, I wrote her one with God’s guidance.

I am now sharing this devotional with you all in hopes that you could use this as a resource to reflect on and write your own Bridal Shower Devotional over becoming a Proverbs 31 Wife.

So here it is:

A Proverbs 31 Wife

As the heart of my young sister in law, which I immediately fell in love with, to the sister in Christ you came to be, to the woman of Christ you are now, and the wife you will soon be, I see God forming these characteristics within you and the desires of your heart molding into the woman & wife God intends you to be, exactly as this passage describes.

The Wife Of Noble Character

Proverbs 31

Who can find a wife of noble character? She is far more precious than jewels.

The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will not lack anything good.

She rewards him with good, not evil, all the days of her life.

She selects wool & flax and works with willing hands.

She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from far away.

She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and portions for her female servants

She evaluates a field and buys it; she plants a vineyard with her earnings.

She draws on her belt of strength and reveals that her arms are strong.

She sees that her profits are good, and her lamp never goes out at night.

She extends her hands to the spinning staff, and her hands hold the spindle.

Her hands reach out to the poor, and she extends her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all in her household are doubly clothed.

She makes her own bed coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Her husband is known at the city gates, where he sits among the elders of the land.

She makes and sells linen garments; and she delivers belts to the merchants.

Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come.

Her mouth speaks wisdom and loving instruction is on her tongue.

She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle.

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her; “Many woman have done noble deeds, but you surpass them all!”

Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fear the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates.

A Godly Wife Chosen

Proverbs 31 was written by a mother to her son, to assist him with finding a godly wife. She advises him to pick a woman who is faithful to her husband, a hard worker, pure, moral, and industrious. A woman of good character & morality, reliable & trustworthy. One that is kind, honorable, strong, wise, Godly & respected. You, Gracen, were chosen to become a wife, and I know many of these characteristics stood out to Karson as he chose you, especially as God has been at work in you throughout your life, and even more so in the last year. The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord. Wives are a unique role, designed by God, and as you read this passage, you see how this is a role that can only be fulfilled by a woman whose heart is set on the Lord.

Not A Menial Task, But A Beautiful & Fruitful Gift

Being a wife is not a menial task, but it is a beautiful gift. Proverbs 31 depicts a strong woman who puts God’s wisdom into practice in her life and manages the gifts God gives to a woman – a marriage, a home, her work, and family well. She manages well all God entrusts to her, maybe not always perfectly, and certainly not by our own wills or abilities, but with a willingness to serve and with a life handed over to Him. This gift of marriage is one of the most fruitful, and most rewarding gifts to be received, but only if you allow God’s hand to be at work within it.

A Sanctification Process

A marriage is also a lifelong sanctification process, designed by God, that is now being gifted to you. Being a wife of noble character is not something that can be accomplished in a day, or on your own. As you read through Proverbs 31, see it as God’s list of characteristics and ways that he will work within your heart & your desires, and implement in your life over time. Every role you hear in this passage is uniquely designed for a wife to be exactly how God intends her to be, as His image bearer. Each role and characteristic you hear in this chapter will resonate with you in different seasons. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

So I encourage you to keep coming back to Proverbs 31 with open hands and listening ears, allowing God to transform you into a wife of noble character and letting God speak to you in each season ahead. You will then see the desires of your heart becoming more like His as you remain in Him in your marriage, and seek to serve Him and your husband. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. Submit yourself wholly to God and your husband and may you embody the characteristics of this virtuous woman you are becoming even today, but even more as you enter into the gift of marriage in your youth as as you grow in His image all the days of your life.

Love you Gracen! And I can’t wait to see the Proverbs 31 woman you become!

xoxo,

Your sister by marriage & in Christ

What Was The Result of Reading a Devotional at A Bridal Shower?

The answer to this question will only be fully answered in eternity, but today, I am able to tell you how much this poured into this sweet bride to be. She quoted much of this devotional at her bachelorette party the following month. She recites verses of Proverbs 31. She even chooses to reflect & live by this wisdom each and every day.

And for those in the room who were married for decades, those who are stay at home moms, working moms or wives, devoted wives, struggling in their marriage, to those eager to be married some day, and those about to get engaged, it had something in it for everyone there. Some there loved Jesus, some didn’t know him hardly at all. And I prayed for all those in the room as I prepared this devotional. And I pray today that it continues to touch their lives and provides them much wisdom of their purpose as a wife or future wife.
